Latest Catches

We aim to provide weekly fishing reports for the River Alness on this page throughout the main salmon season from July. If you catch a salmon, sea-trout or quality brown trout on any of the Alness fishings, then e-mail us the details via the enquiries page and we will include it in our catch reports.

The index provides access to weekly catch reports since July 2009. Click on the links below to read the fishing reports for earlier seasons.

Novar 31/10/09

by Novar Fishings Manager - 19:41 on 03 November 2009

The 'Last Hurrah'!

The wet and warm weather continued. Water levels were good all week, starting at + 1ft 8in on Monday and reaching + 2ft 9in (a bit too high) on Tuesday night. Water levels then receded for the rest of the week dropping to + 1ft by Saturday when temperatures also reached 15 deg C!

Good water resulted in good catches and at least 55 salmon and grilse were caught during the week. While most were coloured, there were a few fresh fish caught, including one sea-liced ‘bar of silver’. Seven anglers managed to land 3 or more fish in a day during the course of the week. Amongst them, Graham Shepherd from Wick had 4 fish on Monday from Beat 6 including the sea-liced grilse weighing in at 5 lbs, and he also landed a 14 lbs coloured cock fish on Saturday. Graham’s fishing partner Sandip Datta, also from Wick, caught 3 fish on Wednesday from Beat 5; David Hook from Gloucestershire caught 3 on Thursday from Beat 4 and Paul Houlden from Ardross caught 4 fish on Saturday on Beat 2. Tara Hurn landed her first ever salmon on Thursday a 6 lbs fish from Beat 4.

Graham Shepherd (not the sea-liced grilse!)

So an excellent week, bringing the season to a close on a high. Early counts suggest the total catch for the Novar beats for 2009 to be over 390, perhaps pushing the 400 mark!
