Latest Catches

We aim to provide weekly fishing reports for the River Alness on this page throughout the main salmon season from July. If you catch a salmon, sea-trout or quality brown trout on any of the Alness fishings, then e-mail us the details via the enquiries page and we will include it in our catch reports.

The index provides access to weekly catch reports since July 2009. Click on the links below to read the fishing reports for earlier seasons.

The Mild Weather Continues

Another mild week, though with enough rain to keep the water in good condition. The water height on Monday was just + 4in, but this was increased to + 7in for Tuesday through compensation flow, and rain on Wednesday provided a welcome ‘bump’ in water level for Thursday peaking at + 1ft 4in which resulted in a run of fish through the lower beats. The level then dropped away again before heavier rain on Saturday produced a good spate of + 2ft on Saturday night. A few fresh fish continued to enter the river through the week, and a fresh grilse was caught on Saturday. Normally at this time of year as spawning time approaches, we would expect the salmon to become quite aggressive and ‘free-taking’, but with temperatures > 10 deg C all week and no frosts (only a couple this year so far), there was no evidence of this and with the exception of Thursday the fishing appeared fairly slow.

The Novar beats were lightly fished for most of the week and the known total catch currently stands at 18 fish. The biggest success story was from Stefan Trobos and Paul Lorenz from Austria, who both claimed their first salmon on the Thursday; Stefan landing 3 up to 9 lbs and losing another! Mark Hewitt also had 3 fish for the week.

Big water on Saturday night and more rain on Sunday, should provide some interesting conditions for the last week of the season….
